How to Create an Automated Table of Figures: Essential for Institute Papers

Why a Table of Figures is Mandatory

In college and institute paper formatting, specifically for technical degrees like Engineering or Science, a List of Figures is a strict requirement. It serves as a quick reference guide for every chart, graph, and diagram in your thesis.

Manually creating this list is error-prone. If you move Figure 3.1 to the next page, your manual list becomes outdated instantly.

PaperFormat.net automates this process. The system scans your document for every Figure Caption you have created and compiles them into a perfectly formatted list with corresponding page numbers.

Method 1: Automatic Generation (Recommended)

Refer to the screenshot above and follow these steps to generate your list in seconds.

Step 1: Access the Table Module

  • Navigate to the "Table" tab in the top navigation bar.
  • Select "List of Figures" from the dropdown menu at the top left (circled in the image).

Step 2: Enable Auto-Sync

  • Ensure the "Auto Sync" toggle at the top right is switched ON (Green).
  • Why? This ensures that if you change a figure's caption in Chapter 4, the list updates automatically without you typing a word.

Step 3: Configure the List

  • Check the Box: Ensure the "List of Figures" checkbox is selected at the bottom.
  • Define Headers:
    • Left Header: Enter "FIGURE NAME" (as shown in the image).
    • Right Header: Enter "PAGE NO.".
    • Repeat Headers: Check this box to ensure the headers appear on subsequent pages if your list is long.

Step 4: Generate

  • Click the "REFRESH" button.
  • Result: As seen in the preview on the right, the system generates a professional list (e.g., "Fig.3.1. Formation of Heterojunction...") with accurate page numbers aligned to the right.

Method 2: Manual Customization

Sometimes, you might want to shorten a very long caption for the list without changing the actual caption under the image.

Step 1: Switch to Manual Mode

  • Turn the "Auto Sync" toggle OFF.
  • A manual editing interface will appear.

Step 2: Import and Edit

  • Click "Import current auto-generated list". This pulls all your current figures into editable rows.
  • Edit Entries: You can click on any figure name to rename it. For example, if your figure caption is 3 lines long, you can shorten it here to a single line for the index.
  • Reorder/Delete: You can use the drag handles to reorder items or the trash icon to remove specific figures from the list.

Why This is Better Than Word

  • Live Tracking: You don't need to update page numbers manually. The system tracks exactly where "Figure 3.4" is located.
  • Perfect Alignment: The dotted leaders (......) and page numbers are automatically aligned, avoiding the "ragged edge" look of manual typing.
  • Combined Indices: You can manage your Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of Tables all from this one screen, ensuring consistent formatting across your entire project report.
